Arrest made, another sought after reported rape and carjacking near CCU on Halloween

Conway police have made an arrest in connection with the reported rape and carjacking that happened during Halloween at an apartment complex near Coastal Carolina University.

Ja’Real Tavon Warren, 17, of Green Sea, was arrested Tuesday and charged with various counts including attempted murder, armed robbery, first-degree criminal sexual conduct and kidnapping, according to a news release from Conway. He’s being held in J. Reuben Long Detention Center without bail, according to online jail records.

A 19-year-old woman was raped and had her car stolen late at night on Oct. 31 at The Cove at Coastal Carolina, a privately-owned apartment complex across the street from the university’s campus, according to a police report.

The woman told police she was sexually assaulted and the suspects fled in her car. She was taken to Conway Medical Center in an ambulance after suffering both visible and non-visible injuries, according to police records.

The police report states that a weapon was involved in the rape and carjacking, but did not specify what type of weapon.

Police are still seeking another person of interest in this case, a man named Mije Basnight, who police describe as a Black male about 5-foot-8-inches and 135 pounds. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call the Conway Police Department at (843) 248-1799.
