Man dead after barricading himself, dog in Water Tower house and starting fire, police say

A man and his dog are dead after he barricaded himself inside a house on Water Tower Road and set it aflame, police said.

Water Tower Road is blocked Wednesday morning after the Horry County Sheriff’s Office came to evict the man from the property, Tom Fox, Chief Deputy said.

“It didn’t take long for the building to be fully engulfed, Fox said. “No one could make entry in the building, so they had to establish a perimeter and extinguish the fire.”

Horry County Fire Rescue has the fire 99% contained and is on scene as of 11 a.m. Heavy smoke could be seen for miles as the house burned.

Horry County Police Department and SWAT are also on scene and are asking people to avoid the area. Fox said an arson investigation is being handed over to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
