Arrest made in killing of Conway man near Bucksport Road, Horry County police say
A Conway man is behind bars after police say he shot and killed a man after beating him with a contractor’s level near Bucksport Road this week.
John Edward Brown Jr. was arrested June 12, a day after the shooting. He is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime
Phillip Huggins, 32, was killed in the shooting, according to Horry County Coroner Tamara Willard.
The shooting happened at 965 Bucksport Rd in Conway, according to Horry County police. Huggins was transported to Conway Medical Center where he died. He lived in Conway, according to Willard.
Horry County police responded to the 900 block of Bucksport Road around 7 p.m. after shots were fired.
Police have not released information about a motive for the shooting.
Brown was charged with second degree lynching in 2004. The crime is defined as any act of violence inflicted by a mob upon another person which result in death. Prosecutors dropped the case in 2007. He was also charged with second degree assault and battery in 2014 but the case was also dropped.
