‘I don’t know what in the hell is going on’: 911 calls from fender-bender murder released
“I got shots fired,” a man frantically tells Georgetown County 911 dispatchers. “I don’t know what in the hell is going on.”
Dispatchers then ask for his location, which he says it’s along Georgetown Highway; the numbers he gives are inaudible.
“Get here now!” he yells as the call goes silent.
The unidentified man cries for help were one of two 911 calls from an Aug. 24 fender-bender turned double-murder released recently by the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office. The calls were provided to The Sun News following a Freedom of Information Act request.
Laura Anderson and her stepfather Nick Wall were shot and killed along Georgetown Highway in rural South Carolina. Friends said the shooting happened as Anderson was settling into a new home.
Tysheem Hasheem Walters, 23, of Moncks Corner, rear-ended Wall’s car, police say. After a short conversation, Walters opened fire, shooting and killing the father and his stepdaughter. Paul McConnell was also wounded in the shooting.
In another 911 call, a woman says he was driving down the road and witnessed the shooting.
“It looked like there was a wreck, then an African-American male with dreads was shooting at some other people outside the car,” the caller says in a monotone voice.
Dispatchers ask if anyone was shot, and the caller—either not hearing or understanding the question—says it happened outside of the car.
“It looked like there was some kind of fender-bender,” the caller says.
The woman described the suspect’s clothing and the call ended.
Police say Walters fled after the shooting but was apprehended a short time later. Georgetown Sheriff’s Office deputies charged Walters with two counts of murder, and other charges, in the case. He is being held in Georgetown County Detention Center and faces life in prison.
The case drew national and international attention. It also led one local politician and business owner to find himself in controversy after posting on social media in the shooting’s aftermath.
Pawleys Island Mayor Brian Henry described Black Lives Matter as a “terror organization” in the post and now faces calls of resignation and boycotts of his business.
