A heavy heist: $500 in coins stolen from Horry County gas station vacuum machine, cops say

A suspect boosted $500 in coins from a gas station vacuum machine, and caused another $2,000 in damage, police say.

Horry County police went to the Sunhouse convenience store at 5521 Hwy 905 on Wednesday morning after someone reported an overnight theft.

Video surveillance showed a driver got out of their vehicle and broke open the machine, according to a police report. The suspect took coins and caused an estimated $2,300 in damage.

Surveillance video wasn’t clear enough to make out the suspect or their car’s license plate, according to the report. Police also found no fingerprints on the machine.

Officers have not made an arrest in the case.

A shortage of coins, brought about by the coronavirus pandemic has caused the Federal Reserve to ration quarters, nickels and dimes to banks across the country.
