‘Awaken to an explosion’: Suspicious fire worries Myrtle Beach neighborhood

Provided by Deanna Ecklund.

Thursday morning was typically quiet along 10th Avenue South in Myrtle Beach until it was rocked by a propane tank set on fire.

“Basically, the whole complex was awakened to an explosion,” said Deanna Ecklund.

Ecklund said they came outside around 4 a.m. to find her husband Greg’s truck on fire. Someone had placed a propane tank and aerosol cans in the truck’s bed and lit it on fire. Now the neighborhood is left with questions of who did it.

Myrtle Beach police say they are investigating the suspicious fire in the 400 block of 10th Ave. South. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 843-918-1300. Officers have yet to make an arrest in the case.

Ecklund provided photos of the aftermath of the fire, which totaled the truck. The images show the charred truck and the propane tank in the back.

A suspect took a propane tank from a neighbor’s property, placed it in the truck and then lit it on fire, Ecklund said. The neighborhood sees foot traffic from people coming off the beach, but never any serious crime, she said.

“It was heartbreaking and it was a shock and who could have done something like this and why?” Ecklund asked.
