Walgreens pharmacy employee charged with stealing pills from patient bottles

An Horry County Walgreens employee is accused of taking prescription drugs from the pharmacy and patient pill bottles, according to a warrant.

Melissa Miranda, 33, was charged with theft of controlled substances by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. She was booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on Friday and released on $2,500 bond.

Theft of controlled substances is punishable by up to five years in prison.

Investigators say Miranda worked at the Murrells Inlet Walgreens, 2872 S. Hwy 17, as a pharmacy technician.

Miranda admitted that she took oxycodone from the pharmacy and from filled patient bottles, according to an arrest warrant.

The thefts happened between June 2019 and March 2020, according to the warrant. Investigators did not document how many pills they believe Miranda stole.
