Dozens arrested in Horry County drugs trafficking operation, officials announce
More than 20 people were arrested on Tuesday as federal and local police busted a drug trafficking ring in Horry County.
Officials announced 23 people were arrested in connection to the investigation, and officers are searching for three more suspects. The ring operated out of the Cedar Branch area, which is off S.C. 9 outside of Loris.
“Their efforts reached into Myrtle Beach and elsewhere,” said Everett McMillan, with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in South Carolina.
Federal prosecutors joined with local police at the Horry County Justice Center on Tuesday afternoon to announce the arrest. The investigation lasted more than a year and was part of an effort to target violent crime in the Myrtle Beach area.
The trafficking ring included heroin, cocaine, fentanyl and other drugs, McMillan said. Investigators also seized guns and $80,000 during the lengthy investigation.
Jeff Long, with the 15th Judicial Circuit Drug Enforcement Unit, said the investigation started about 18 months ago and was designed to help rid the area of drug behavior. The DEU is a multi-jurisdictional unit covering both Horry and Georgetown counties.
“I hope this case makes a big difference in that community,” Long said.
Horry County Police Chief Joe Hill said officers can now return to community policing in that area. They now have to work to rebuild the trust, Hill added.
With the 23 arrests, Long said their work is not done and warned against others trying to deal drugs in the Cedar Branch area. He said officers are still looking out for them and they will be the next arrests.
“You just didn’t make the cut today,” Long said, “but we’ll be coming for you.”
