Man charged in hit-and-run of a bicyclist where victim might lose a limb: report

A bicyclist hit by a car might lose a limb as a result of the collision, and police say they have arrested the man behind the wheel.

Myrtle Beach police charged Nathan McNeil, 31, with leaving the scene of an accident with great bodily injury. He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Officers went to 27th Avenue South and Yaupon Drive around 10 p.m. Thursday for a reported collision between a car and a person on a bike. The victim had a compound fracture to his lower leg that required surgery, according to an arrest warrant. Police on the scene said the victim might lose a limb as a result of his injuries.

The driver of the car fled the scene before police arrived.

Investigators determined McNeil was the driver and found him nine miles away from the crash, according to the warrant. He never tried to stop and did not call 911 for help, according to the warrant.

Leaving the scene of an accident with great bodily injury is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
