Georgetown County detention officer fired after allegations of assault on an inmate
A Georgetown County deputy was fired after allegations he assaulted an inmate, the sheriff announced on Wednesday.
The sheriff’s office charged Taylor Hairston, 25, of Goose Greek, South Carolina, with third-degree assault and misconduct in office. He was arrested on Wednesday and is being held in the county detention center pending a bond hearing.
A fellow correctional officer told administrators on June 11 that Hairston “inappropriately and unjustifiably” assaulted an inmate. The officer conducted an internal investigation that included interviewing witnesses and security footage, officials stated.
Hairston had been an employee at the detention center since Oct. 1, 2018.
Criminal investigators determined Hairston’s actions violated South Carolina law and charged him.
His arrest comes during a national uproar and discussion over police brutality against citizens.
