3 accused of drive-by shootings in Conway area, one suspect was on bond for murder
A man on bond for murder is one of three people charged in connection to a series of drive-by shootings in the Conway area, police say.
On Tuesday, police announced the arrests of Joshua Spain, James Legette and Jamela McQueen. The three are accused of various crimes connected to shootings in April. The three suspects are being held in J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
The shootings happened in April on Family Lane, Highway 548, Kitty Lane and Palmetto Street. Investigators determined all four shootings were connected and charged the three suspects on Monday.
In 2017, Horry County police charged Spain with murder in connection to a shooting on Willow Road in the Conway area. He was free on $170,000 bail at the time of the most recent shooting. Leggette was currently out on $2,000 bond for gun and drug charges in April. McQueen was out on $2,000 bond for a drug charge and failure to stop for blue lights in connection to an April arrest.
Family Lane
On April 4, Horry County police went to Family Lane for a reported shooting. One person was shot on the side of his stomach, but was alert, according to a police report. The victim said a suspect came to his house to demand money.
When the victim could not provide the money, the suspect shot him, the report states.
A witness told police that two weeks earlier the suspect was at the home when the witness accidentally shot out the window in the suspect’s girlfriend’s car. The witness said they believed the earlier shooting led to the April 4 incident, the report states.
Police charged Legette, 24, with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime in connection to the April 4 shooting. Officers charged McQueen with accessory after the fact.
Highway 548
On April 13, Horry County police went to Highway 548 for a reported shooting. A victim left before police arrived, according to a report.
The victim later told police she was on the front porch with three children when she saw a car drive slowly in front of the home. When the car got closer, the victim heard gunshots, the report states.
The children and the woman were inside as the home was hit by bullets, according to the report. Police found bullet holes at the side of the mobile home and in a nearby vehicle.
Authorities charged Spain, 27, with four counts of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime in connection to that shooting.
Kitty Lane
On April 13, police went to Kitty Lane for a reported shooting. Officers spoke to four victims who said they were inside their home and thought they heard firecrackers outside, according to a police report.
They then noticed bullets going through the walls and glass shattering, the report states. The home also filled with smoke.
The victims said they hadn’t lived at the home for a long time and didn’t know why someone would try to harm them, according to the report.
Officers charged Spain and Legette each with four counts of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime in connection to the shooting. Authorities also charged McQueen, 32, with accessory after the fact.
Palmetto Street
On April 13, Conway police went to Palmetto Steet near Ninth Avenue for a report of shots fired, according to a police report. Officers found several shell casings in the road.
Police charged Spain with two counts of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. They also charged Legette with two counts of attempted murder in connection to the shooting.
