Myrtle Beach police make arrest related to multiple Market Common area vehicle break-ins

Jerrett Nelson Leary, 27, of Socastee was taken into custody Tuesday and faces charges related to a series of vehicle break-ins in the Market Common area.

According to Myrtle Beach Police Cpl. Thomas Vest, an off-duty officer was on his way home when he saw Leary walking down Palmetto Point Blvd and recognized him as a person with an active arrest warrant. The officer notified the Horry County Police Department, and they took Leary into custody without incident.

Leary was in jail at the Myrtle Beach Police Department late Wednesday afternoon, awaiting a bond hearing.

Myrtle Beach Police responded to a reported auto burglary that occurred on April 18, in the 1400 block of Suncrest Drive in the Market Common District of Myrtle Beach and investigators were able to identify Leary from previous vehicle break-ins using camera footage from a residence.

All vehicles that were broken into were unlocked. Leary was also charged in April of 2019 in connection with a series of vehicle break-ins in the same area, and was arrested at least one other time in 2016 for alleged theft.

He was known to frequent the Market Common area and was seen riding a bicycle through neighborhoods during daylight hours and returning to the same areas at night.

Myrtle Beach Police Chief Amy Prock advised residents to lock their doors, secure and bring their valuables inside, and encouraged those who have been affected by Leary to contact the city’s victim advocates at 843-918-1372.

The Myrtle Beach Police Department is asking for anyone in the area to check their video systems for additional evidence of criminal activity and share the information with the department at 843-918-1382.
