North Myrtle Beach police chief resigns, no reason for the decision given

North Myrtle Beach’s police chief has submitted a letter of resignation, though he did not provide a reason for his leaving.

City spokesman Pat Dowling said Greg Purden submitted his resignation to the city on March 13. His last day will be March 27.

“I appreciate the opportunity to have worked with so many wonderful people that make up not only the Department of Public Safety but many city departments and staff,” Purden wrote in his resignation letter. “It has been an honor to serve as Police Chief during this past year. I wish the department and city continued success.”

Purden joined North Myrtle Beach police in 2019. He had more than 30 years of experience in Florida area before coming to the Grand Strand.

Dowling said the city will not search for a new chief until the concerns and closures because of coronavirus in South Carolina end.

“The City has a highly capable Police Department staff at all levels and the Police Department continues to provide excellent service for the North Myrtle Beach community,” the city noted in a statement.
