28-year-old man faces charges for hurting a 7-week-old baby, Horry police say

A man faces two felony counts after police say he hurt a 7-week-old baby.

Horry County police arrested and charged Derrick Joseph Edwards, 28, with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and unlawful neglect towards a child. He is being held in J. Reuben Long Detention Center without bail.

In February and March, the 7-week-old was taken to medical facilities with multiple injuries, according to arrest warrants and a police report.

The warrants state Edwards “caused great bodily injury” to the baby.

Police investigated an incident in early March after a person reported to the department that the victim’s parents said the baby stopped breathing and vomited, according to the police report. Medical personnel had to help resuscitate the baby.

Unlawful neglect of a child is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature can be punished by up to 20 years incarceration.
