South Carolina state trooper charged in connection to Myrtle Beach area assault

An off-duty South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper is accused of getting into a fight with another man he suspected of driving drunk, officials said.

David Andrew Eck was booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center on Friday and charged with third-degree assault and battery. Officials say Eck got into a fight with another man On May 5, 2019.

Eck saw a man driving erratically, who also tried to the force the off-duty trooper off the road, according to an arrest warrant. Eck reported the incident to Myrtle Beach police and then followed the man to his home.

There, a fight ensued and a witness said they saw Eck hit the victim in the head and rub his face in the ground, the warrant states.

Third-degree assault and battery is punishable by up to 30 days in jail.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigated the case after a request from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
