Victim identified in fatal Horry County shooting, officials classify death as homicide

An 18-year-old died in a morning shooting near Loris, officials said.

The Horry County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Rashawn D. Smith, of Tabor City, North Carolina.

The shooting took place Saturday morning near S.C. Highway 9, according to Horry County police spokeswoman Mikayla Moskov said.

The incident was reported around 2:30 a.m. as a motor-vehicle crash, but then a person passing by reported seeing bullet holes in a vehicle, according to police radio traffic. Police found the victim inside the car, dead, with a gunshot wound.

Smith was the only person killed in the shooting which deputy coroner Chris Dontell classified as a homicide.

No one has been charged in connection to the shooting.
