Police found several abused dogs, including one hanging from a pen, at a Longs home in the aftermath of 2018’s Hurricane Florence.

Eighteen months later, a 19-year-old suspect faces charges in connection to the abuse.

Horry County police charged Kishan Rama Raunak Johnson, of Longs, with abandonment of animals and improper care of animals. He was booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center on Tuesday and freed after posting $1,000 bail.

Police spokeswoman Mikayala Moskov said there had been an warrant for Johnson’s arrest and the Horry County Sheriff’s Office recently arrested him.

Horry County police officers went to Half Pint Road for a welfare check about two weeks after Hurricane Florence thrashed the Grand Strand. At the time, many roads and yards were flooded in the county from heavy rainfall.

Officer said the water levels were high on the property and they noticed several dogs that were sickly, with irritated skin and hair missing, according to a police report.

A 6-week-old puppy was found hanging upside dog from an elevated dog pen, the report states. Officers thought the dog was dead, but as they approached, the pup started to move its legs and they freed the dog.

There were also several barrels used as dog houses on the property, according to the report.

The dogs went to the animal care center for treatment, the report states.
