Man charged in connection to rape of a 6-year-old in Horry County

A 35-year-old man faces life in prison after being accused of sexually assaulting a 6-year-old.

Horry County police charged Justin Edward Markante, of Conway, with first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor. He was booked into the detention center on Monday. He is being held without bail.

First-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor is punishable by 25 years to life in prison.

Police started to investigate the rape after the victim and another person contacted the police. The now 12-year-old girl said the incident happened about six years ago at a Wilbur Dunn Place residence, according to a police report.

Horry County police declined to release further information as the case remains under investigation.
