Horry County cops charge man in connection to shooting neighbor’s dog on New Year’s Day

An Aynor man is facing felony charges after shooting and killing his neighbor’s dog, according to Horry County police.

Jake Alexander Brew, 33, was arrested and charged with ill treatment of animals, a felony, in connection with an incident in which a dog was shot and killed on New Year’s Day. Brew was arrested Friday morning and was detained for several hours before posting $5,000 bond at J. Reuben Long Detention Center.

Police responded to Double R Circle near Aynor around 1 p.m. on Jan. 1 for a report of a dangerous animal. While en route, the responding officer was stopped by an individual who said that their dog had been shot by her neighbor across the street, officials said. Police later determined the two calls were associated with the same animal, according to police.

After conducting interviews with the dog owner, Brew and his children, who were present during the incident, police determined that the dog was killed while on Brew’s property, posing a present threat to his children, officials said.

Later in the afternoon, Horry County police received a tip suggesting witness statements had not disclosed what really took place when the dog was shot. Police launched a follow-up investigation led by the department’s Environmental Team, which specializes in animal cases, police said.

Information discovered over the course of the investigation was enough to charge Brew in connection to the shooting, according to police.

According to the arrest warrant, Brew had tied the dog to a metal pole and shot it in the head two times, causing unnecessary pain and suffering. Brew had previously told police the year-old lab was on his property and posed a threat to him and his children after the dog growled and showed its teeth, according to police.

The dog’s ashes have been returned to the family, police said.
