She was convicted of killing two in Horry County, and now wants out of prison
A woman convicted of murder and lynching for killing her husband and a friend says she should be released from prison because she is innocent.
Connie Jean Brown filed a Habeus Corpus request in Horry County court on Friday. The request acts like an appeal and explains why someone should be released from incarceration.
In 2002, Connie Brown was convicted of the double-murder and lynching for the stabbing and beating death of her husband, Billy Ray Brown, and his friend.
The killings happened in June 2000 and Billy Brown was found dead in the couple’s bedroom. The friend was found dead in the washroom of the Brown’s mobile home on Olive Drive in Green Sea, South Carolina. Connie Brown told police that intruders came into the home and killed the men while she and her children watched.
Brown, her mother, her sister and her brother were all sentenced to prison in connection to the murders. Connie Brown was arrested 14 months after the two men’s deaths.
A judge sentenced Connie Brown to life in prison for her role in the killings. She is currently housed at Leath Correctional Institution in Greenwood County.
According to Connie Brown’s filing, she has maintained her innocence and will testify that she was not part of a conspiracy to kill her husband.
Connie Brown said the actual killers hid their faces during the attack. She adds the state provided no reason they would need to cover their face or flee if Connie Brown was part of the conspiracy.
