Crime spree that stretched the Carolinas ends in police killing the suspect
A man suspected in a crime spree that stretched across the Carolinas was shot and killed by police in the Wilmington, North Carolina, area Tuesday night.
Officials said Kyle Horton was a person of interest in a Tuesday armed robbery at Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and a carjacking near a shopping center in Charlotte.
New Hanover County Sheriff’s Lt. J.J. Brewer confirmed with The Sun News that Horton was killed in an overnight shooting at the Braircliff Villas Apartments in the Wilmington, North Carolina, area. No officers were injured in the shooting, which was a result of the deputies searching for Horton.
Officials said Horton pulled a gun on detectives. The sheriff has asked the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to assist in the investigation, Brewer said.
Myrtle Beach police Cpl. Thomas Vest said Horton was a suspect in the Broadway at the Beach robbery that was reported around 5 p.m. Tuesday near Rack Room Shoes at the popular attraction. The suspect presented a weapon during the robbery and fled. Nobody was hurt in the incident.
Vest said they identified Horton shortly after the incident and believed he was heading to Wilmington.
Horton was also wanted in connection to a Dec. 13, carjacking near the Arboretum Shopping Center in the Charlotte area, according to WCNC.
Officials from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police did not respond to multiple calls and emails on Wednesday.
