He was followed home, beaten after he didn’t give a beggar money at a Myrtle Beach store
A meeting at a gas station turned violent when a suspect followed a man home where he robbed and assaulted him, police say.
Officers responded to a 16th Avenue North apartment on Friday morning for a reported strong-armed robbery.
The 82-year-old victim said he was at a nearby Kings Highway gas station when Terry Jerome Smith asked him for money, according to a police report. The victim did not give any money and went back to the apartment.
Smith knocked on the door, and when the victim answered, Smith hit him in the head with a glass bottle, according to the report.
Smith again hit the victim in the head with the bottle, took the victim’s wallet and fled the scene on foot.
Police used the city’s camera system to get a photo of the suspect, later identified as Smith.
Myrtle Beach police charged Smith, 50, with two counts of first-degree robbery, armed robbery, attempted murder, two counts of credit card fraud and credit card theft. He is being held in J. Reuben Long Detention Center without bail.
Smith faces life in prison if convicted.
