Federal investigators contacted after fire in Conway Catholic church

Fire investigators are looking at a suspicious fire in a Conway Catholic church.

Horry County police went to St. James Catholic Church, 1071 Academy Drive, around 1:45 a.m. Tuesday for a suspicious fire.

An Horry County fire investigator said a trash can in the gathering hall caught fire, according to the report. It was not known how the blaze started and nobody was reportedly in the building.

A witness found the fire when they went to turn off the alarm, according to the report. The witness moved the trash can outside so the building did not burn.

The fire investigator told the officer they needed a report because of the fire’s suspicious nature. Fire officials also planned to contact the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives because it was a fire that happened in a place of worship.
