Police are investigating a shooting in which one person was injured in the Booker T. Washington community of Myrtle Beach on Sunday afternoon.

Myrtle Beach police say the incident took place in the backyard of 1112 Hemingway St., which sits at the intersection with Vereen Street. Officers remain on scene investigating and working to locate subjects involved, according to a news release.

Judy Stover Williams, who lives at the residence but was not home at the time of the incident, said she received a call from a family member who lives a block away and he told her that there was a “war zone” in her backyard.

“There were two bullet holes in the dining room,” she said after returning home.

The family member who Stover Williams said heard and saw at least some of the incident, told her it appeared there were seven or eight people involved in what seemed to be some sort of chase.

“It could have been a bloodbath if things went worse,” Stover Williams said.

Police had the home secured with caution tape and were seen going in and out of the house between 1:30 and 2 p.m. Stover Williams said police recovered shell casings in her backyard and were taking one slug out of the wall.

At approximately 12:08 p.m., officers were called to the 1100 block of Hemingway Street after receiving reports of shots fired nearby, the news release states. Police identified Stover Williams’ home as the scene of the crime and had gotten a report that a victim appeared at the hospital with an apparent gunshot wound, according to the release.

As of just after 2 p.m., police were still set up at the corners of Hemingway and Vereen and Hemingway and Graham Avenue.

“I’ve had it up to here,” Stover Williams said, pleading for the city to put more of a focus on keeping local neighborhoods safe. “It’s gotten old.”

Police ask that anyone with information contact them at 843-918-1382.
