Sumter man sentenced to five years in prison for fatal Loris crash
A Sumter man has pleaded guilty to reckless homicide and was sentenced to five years in prison in the death of a Loris woman last year, according to court records.
Tyshawn Antwan Brown, 21 pleaded guilty Wednesday to the charge of reckless homicide, death results within three years caused by injury from a vehicle, according to court records.
Circuit Court Judge Benjamin Culbertson sentenced Brown to serve 10 years in prison, but suspended that sentence upon his service of five years in prison and pay court costs, according to records. Brown was also given credit for 168 days he’s served since his arrest on Dec. 2.
Brown was charged by Loris police after the Nov. 25 crash, which occurred about 8 p.m. in the 2900 block of Church Street near the 53-year-old victim’s home, according to a Loris police report.
Marva Ann Edge’s husband called police after hearing a loud noise that night. They arrived to find two vehicles in the parking lot at 3410 Church St., a 1998 white Ford Explorer and a 2003 black GMC Envoy.
Officers determined that Brown had been drinking before the crash in which Marva Ann Edge, 53, of Loris died, according to the report. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Brown was taken to the hospital and then into custody, according to the report. An officer noted “Brown had a strong odor consistent with an alcoholic beverage coming from his person. Brown failed to maintain conversation with me,” the officer wrote in the report.
A passenger with Brown, a 17-year-old Loris man, was also taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries he suffered in the crash, according to the report. Police also found a handgun inside the vehicle operated by Brown.
