Season for giving also a time for stealing: Police tips on how to avoid being a target
’Tis the season of giving, a time when folks flock to stores in search of the perfect gifts for loved ones.
Unfortunately, it can also be a prime time for thieves.
With more people out shopping than usual during the holiday season, it’s important to ensure you don’t become an easy target for criminals.
In lieu of the season, the Horry County Police Department released a list of tips that can help keep you safe while out and about:
- Be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. Criminals often confront people who are distracted.
- Park your car in well-lit areas of shopping center parking lots and avoid shopping alone.
- Do not leave packages exposed in your car. Lock them in your trunk or cover them with a blanket or other object.
- Look in your car before entering – do not enter if something does not seem right.
- Do not leave your purse/wallet unattended for any amount of time.
- Record the numbers for each of the credit cards you own. This will help with reporting theft or the loss of the card.
- Be extra cautious when using ATMs. Use machines located in highly populated areas and be aware of your surroundings.
