How funny money marked ‘for motion picture use only’ led a dog to the shelter

A man allegedly left a car and a dog behind at a Myrtle Beach gas pump Saturday night after police say he traded a fake $20 bill marked with the words “for motion picture use only” with another man for legitimate change.

The reported victim told police he knew the $20 bill he received was a fake. The words stamped on its top right corner provided a big hint.

But by the time the man saw it and reported the fake currency to police Saturday night, the suspect had allegedly fled the Circle K station on Oleander Drive on foot, according to a Myrtle Beach police report.

The man told police he found a key on the ground while he was pumping gas at the station. As he walked to the store to give the key to a clerk “he encountered a white male outside who was asking for change for a $20 bill,” the report stated.

The man told police he gave the guy three $5 bills and five ones in exchange for what he believed was a $20 bill, but later realized its consistency was off.

Witnesses on scene told officers the suspect had exited a silver Toyota Corolla that was still parked at the pump.

“The suspect left the vehicle and a dog behind,” police noted in the report. “The dog was transported to the Grand Strand Humane Society.”
