‘Improper turn’ led to foot chase; more charges came from what cops say he left behind

An “improper turn” led police on a chase that ended in a drug arrest late Saturday night.

Myrtle Beach police officer J. Camacho was on patrol when he said he saw a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe make an improper right-hand turn from 13th Avenue North onto North Kings Highway.

“The offender crossed over the inside lane and went directly to lane no. 1 without establishing control in lane no. 2,” Camacho noted in an incident report.

The officer initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle near Mr. Joe White Avenue and Chester Street around 11:45 p.m. The vehicle stopped, but its driver fled on foot, according to the report.

Camacho chased after the suspect and was able to relay the man’s location to another officer who was coming to assist. The suspect “ultimately surrendered” a few blocks away, Camacho noted in his report.

Other officers on scene said they found a white powdery substance in a pink Ziplock bag and a green leafy substance in plastic wrap inside the abandoned Tahoe. The powder tested positive for cocaine and weighed nearly 4 grams, according to the report. The plant material weighed 10.2 grams.

Twenty-eight-year-old Demetrius Antonio Collier of Green Sea was charged with possession with intent to deliver cocaine and resisting arrest. He was also cited for simple possession of marijuana.
