Horry County Schools’ Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. Monday at the District Office, 335 Four Mile Road, Conway, to discuss a network security issue the school system has been battling.

Horry schools is working with state and federal investigators to determine exactly what to do about a computer virus that affected several servers across the district. The virus doesn’t steal any data from the computers, so no student, parent or school records were breached, according to district spokeswoman Teal Harding. The virus uses a high-level encryption to lock up data, then requires a key – with a monetary ransom – to unlock the data.

Horry County committee to hear landfill update

The Horry County Solid Waste Authority will update the county’s Infrastructure and Regulation committee at its meeting at 9 a.m. Tuesday about an agreement it entered with Charleston County.

In October, Horry County leaders said they wanted to see detailed monthly reports about the impact of Charleston County’s recyclables on the local Solid Waste Authority’s recycling center. The Lowcountry county signed a contract with the SWA to process its bottles, cans, cardboard and other recyclables at the authority’s facility on S.C. 90. But the agreement hit a snag in September when some Horry County Council members expressed frustration with the SWA for making the deal so quickly and without their required approval.

Mock trial set for Saturday

Eight schools in the Pee Dee will compete in the annual SC Bar Conway Regional High School Mock Trial Competition on Saturday at the Horry County Government and Justice Center located at 1301 Second Ave., in Conway.

This year’s case focuses on arson, robbery and the murder of a well-known woman in a small, fictitious South Carolina town. Students will fill the roles of attorneys, witnesses, bailiffs and timekeepers, and each team will be judged on its presentation skills, rather than the legal merits of the case.

Schools participating in the Conway Regional Competition include: Academy for Technology and Academics, Carolina Forest High School, C.E. Murray High School, Johnsonville High School, Kingstree High School, Myrtle Beach High School, North Myrtle Beach High School, and Socastee High School.

A total of 12 teams from five regional competitions will advance to the state competition March 11-12 in Columbia at the Matthew J. Perry Federal Courthouse. The 2016 state champion will advance to the national competition held in Boise, Idaho in May. For more information about the Mock Trial case or program, visit www.scbar.org/lre.
