If it’s January, it’s National Soup month in America and it’s the annual Soup Cook-off in North Myrtle Beach.

Kathy Bazzarre, volunteer faith community nurse and pastoral care assistant at Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church, and Jan Filipow, Counselor with Coastal Samaritan Counseling Center, formulated the event seven years ago to benefit Coastal Samaritan Counseling Center, and it hit an upbeat chord with the community.

Professional and amateur cooks bring their best mixtures to the event, and people attending cast their votes. This year seven pros, eight churches and one pair of amateur cooks have entered the competition. She-crab, seafood chowder, vegetable, chicken noodle, beef and other combinations are among the choices to the delight of soup lovers. The top three winners in each category receive certificates and bragging rights.

Cecil Chandler, co-host of Carolina & Co. LIVE, will host the event as he did last year. Drawings for door prizes, including gift cards to restaurants, fingernail salons and other local businesses, will continue throughout the tastings.

Kathy Heustess, executive director of the CSCC, explained that qualified counselors assist people seeking help with addictions, depression, anxiety, relationships and other personal issues.

Figures show that 624 individuals, comprising 3,625 sessions, were helped through 2014.

“We have top-notch professionals, and everything is confidential,” she said. “Our outcomes are 20 percent better than national norms.”

The affordable plan and adjusted fee schedule accommodate people with limited income. The main office is in Myrtle Beach, but satellite offices are in Conway, Carolina Forest, Little River, Loris, Longs, North Myrtle Beach and Pawleys Island.

Other participating churches besides LRUMC and ODPC are First Baptist of NMB, Our Lady Star of the Sea, St. Stephens Episcopal and Trinity United Methodist.
