Area students graduate, earn honors

▪ Ryan Lowell of Georgetown graduated from Bismarck State College, Bismarck, N.D., with an A.A.S. in Electrical Transmission Systems Technology May 15.

▪ The following area cadets were presented with The Citadel’s Gold Stars, awarded each semester for outstanding academic achievement, for earning a grade point ratio of 3.7 or higher during spring 2014-15: Kyle Jones of Andrews; George Graham and William Mills, both of Conway; Matthew Scalise of Surfside Beach; Charles Holt, Wilson Wicker, Jennifer Burch and Dustin Smith, all of Myrtle Beach; Lloyd Powers of Loris; and Stephen Ikalowych of Oak Island, N.C.

▪ The following Presbyterian College students earned Provost’s List honors for spring 2014-15: freshman Jonathan Paul Gardner of Aynor; Rachel Katherine Ward of Whiteville, N.C., who graduated with an English degree; sophomore Jesse James Glasgow IV and senior Mia Nicole Hutchinson, both of Conway; Helen Elizabeth Wilkins of Georgetown, who graduated with a religion-Christian education degree; freshman Tanner Tyler Chock of Loris; freshman Dinah Davis Johnson and sophomore Mason Gabriel Lewis, both of Myrtle Beach; senior Elizabeth Ashley Holley of Nichols; and sophomore Darcy Noelle Nirenstein of North Myrtle Beach.

▪ Karissa O’Keefe-Young of Myrtle Beach earned a Juris Doctor from Mercer University, Macon, Ga., during the Walter F. George School of Law spring commencement.

▪ Bark Barnes of Pawleys Island earned a Master of Laws from Mercer University, Macon, Ga., during the Walter F. George School of Law spring commencement.

▪ Cassandra Mae Painter of North Myrtle Beach graduated from Western New England University, Springfield, Mass., with a Master of Laws in Estate Planning and Elder Law May 16.

▪ Michelle Candace Martire was named to the Dean’s List for spring 2015 at Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa. She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Martire of Conway.

▪ The following students graduated May 9 with Charleston Southern University’s Class of 2015: Christopher Nwanegwo of Conway, Quanisha Dewitt of Longs and Ashley Barrett, Monique Gaboriau and Jather Stevens, all of Myrtle Beach.

▪ Michael Livers of Little River was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines, at the University of Florida.

▪ The following local high school juniors have been named Furman University Scholars; if they apply for admission and are accepted to Furman, they will receive at least $7,500 in merit-based scholarships per year, or $30,000 over four years: Biraj Dahal and Jamie Karl, both from the Scholars Academy; Mary Duval Guest, Callie Keen and Marci Hogue, all from Socastee High School; Curtis Leonard and Nicholas Emmons, both from St. James High School; Robby Meese, S.C. Governors School for the Arts and Humanities; and Ben Hewes, Christine Humowitz; Aaron Jordan, Kinsey Besser, Emily Blaylock, Jordan Brown, Aubrey Gauthier, David Gleaton, Christopher Kaylor, Bennett Meares, Jordan Payne, Price Rowland and Kate Snelson, all from Waccamaw High School.

▪ Kevin Durrick, a sophomore at the Scholars Academy, recently was nominated to attend the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders in Boston. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who are passionate about science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM.

▪ Maryanne Martini of Myrtle Beach graduated with high honors from St. Mary’s School, Raleigh, N.C., May 17.
