Area students graduate, earn honors

▪ Edward Lawton Hellmer of Myrtle Beach graduated from Woodberry Forest School, Madison County, Va., May 23 and will attend the College of Charleston. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Keith W. Hellmer.

▪ Mikayla Donna’e Morris of Georgetown High School and Alexander Weshefsky of Carolina Forest High School are two of the 60 S.C. high school seniors who were recognized recently for graduating this year with perfect K-12 attendance. The students will receive a certificate of achievement and a personal letter from State Superintendent of Education Molly M. Spearman.

▪ Michelle Ruthenberg of Myrtle Beach, a master’s student in the Global Field Program from Project Dragonfly at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, will travel to Borneo this summer. Ruthenberg will study Borneo’s primate denizens, including the orangutan, and develop new ways to engage communities worldwide in primate conservation.

▪ Shea Thomas of Pawleys Island, a senior at the Academy for the Arts, Science and Technology, was presented with an engraved bronze medallion to recognize her selection as a Distinguished Finalist for South Carolina in the 2015 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. Thomas raised $11,000 for the American Red Cross as a member of the Red Cross Rescue Racers, a nonprofit charity marathon training team.

▪ Caroline Elizabeth Gardner of Aynor recently completed her first year at the Presbyterian College School of Pharmacy.

▪ Jonathan Paul Gardner of Aynor was named to the Provost’s List at Presbyterian College for spring 2015.

▪ Jay Gohil, Stone Holt and Mehrzad Namiranian, all of Horry County, graduated from the S.C. Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics in Hartsville May 30. Gohil, son of Kishorsinh and Guita Gohil, will attend American University. Holt, son of Jeffrey D. and Carol L. Morgan, and Namiranian, son of Farshid and Marjan Namiranian, both plan to attend Clemson University.

▪ Thomas Sloan of Myrtle Beach; Caroline Wisse of Oak Island, N.C.; and Emily Nault of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., graduated from Wake Forest University May 18.

▪ Chesna Lee of Conway graduated with a B.S. in Nursing from Newberry College.

▪ Alexander McIsaac of Myrtle Beach graduated with a B.M. in Performance from Newberry College.

▪ Alex Roberts of Myrtle Beach graduated with a B.A. in Psychology from Newberry College.

▪ Lily Semones of Myrtle Beach graduated with a B.S. in Biology from Newberry College.

▪ Amber Holland of Myrtle Beach was named to the University of South Carolina-Aiken’s President’s List for spring 2015.

▪ Judson Holliday of Galivants Ferry, Ta’Jauwanna Collins of Andrews, Jessica Johnson of Georgetown, Jessica Gagnon of Murrells Inlet, Gabriela Cepeda of Myrtle Beach and Samantha Wells of Myrtle Beach were named to the University of South Carolina-Aiken’s Dean’s List for spring 2015.

▪ Kayleigh Bain of Conway was recently named to the President’s List for spring 2015 at the State University of New York at Potsdam.
