Special election in Surfside Tuesday

Surfside will have its fourth election for town council this year on Tuesday as Julie Samples and Wanda Spannuth contend for an unexpired seat with two years left.

The town held general elections this spring that resulted in a runoff. Councilman Bob Childs eventually won the mayor’s seat against 14-year council incumbent Doug Samples, husband of current candidate Julie Samples. They were separated by just five votes.

A similar scene unfolded two weeks ago, as just six votes separated Julie Samples from the majority necessary to avert a runoff with her next closest competitor. She earned 336 votes, Wanda Spannuth earned 214 votes and former Councilwoman Mary Beth Mabry, who is excluded from the runoff, earned 133 votes.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
