Free backpacks, health screenings for Georgetown families
Georgetown County, the Sadie Grice Funny Scholarship Foundation and Tidelands Health will team up this month to offer free backpacks and school supplies, as well as health screenings for local families.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 12, at the Beck Recreation Center, 2030 Church St., Georgetown. Backpacks and school supplies will be available for the first 500 local students through a back to school jamboree. In addition to this and a health fair, there will also be food, drawings and family friendly activities, said Shelia Edwards, who organized the event for the scholarship foundation.
Conway talent competition slated for Saturday
“Conway SuperStar Competition,” with six finalists per division – “JuniorStar” (ages 12 and younger), “TeenStar” (ages 13-17) and “SuperStar (adults) – 7 p.m. Saturday (rain date Aug. 20) in city’s Riverfront Park, on Elm Street. 843-488-1950 or www.conwayparksandrecreation.com.
Mopars coming to the Grand Strand this week
Beginning Wednesday at 6 p.m., MOPARS will have a cruise in at Carolina Tavern, Inlet Square Mall in Murrells Inlet to kick off a long weekend of Mopars at the Beach.
On Thursday at 9 a.m., there will be a meet and greet at Cheeseburger in Paradise, Myrtle Beach.

CCU alumna, Campbell, throwing for Team USA Friday
Coastal Carolina track and field standout Amber Campbell will be in the hammer throw competition Friday during the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.
This is her third straight trip to the Olympic Games in the hammer throw competition.
Campbell’s qualifying throw earlier this year not only represented a career best, but also an all-time high mark at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
The Olympics airs on NBC locally.
Special election Tuesday in Surfside Beach
Three candidates are campaigning to fill the Surfside Beach Town Council seat left vacant when Bob Childs became mayor this May.
Childs’ unexpired term, left open because he was a town councilman before he became mayor, will end in May 2018. Mary Beth Mabry, Julie Samples and Wanda Spannuth are running to fill the seat.
The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
