Treasurer candidate quits job with treasurer’s office, still campaigning

Horry County Deputy Treasurer Angie Jones, who is running for the vacant seat of treasurer in Tuesday’s election, resigned her position Thursday to take a job in another county office but says she is still actively campaigning for the job.

Jones is holding a press conference Friday morning to explain her sudden job switch to the Horry County Clerk of Court’s office.

In her resignation letter, Jones said she “removed” herself from the Treasurer’s office “for the greater good of Horry County and its citizens.”

“I will no longer subject myself to the hostile work environment and malicious attacks that I have endured since refusing to give up my position as Deputy Treasurer to my opponent, as requested by his campaign manager and the current Treasurer in early February. I will not allow my reputation and character to be assassinated by co-workers and the current Treasurer who publically support my opponent. My resignation as Deputy Treasurer is effective immediately. Let me be clear, I am still a candidate for Horry County Treasurer and I will be on the ballot June 14th. I look forward to serving the citizens of Horry County as their Treasurer.”

Treasurer Roddy Dickinson declined to discuss Jones’ resignation, except to confirm that she had left his employment.

Dickinson is stepping down from the treasurer’s position this year. Running to replace him are Jones, and Jonathan Hyman, who also works in the treasurer’s office as a revenue collector.
