Adult Spelling Bee and A to Z silent auction scheduled
Returning to compete once again in the Brunswick County Adult Spelling Bee are two-time champions Anne Bailey and Anita Stevens.
The pair have competed more than ten times and were runners-up three times before they secured their place as winners. The audience will recognize their signature T-shirts: bright yellow with “The Queen Bees” embroidered on the front and two bees buzzing nearby to complete the effect.
Anita will have a black bow secured at the back of her head. Anne will cast her engaging smile at the audience. They will join more than a dozen two-person teams to compete in the 27th annual Adult Spelling Bee Monday.
“My favorite thing about the bee is that the entire atmosphere is fun for a worthy cause,” says Literacy Council board president Susan Shook. “I hope to see some new teams give our veteran teams a run for their money.”
Kim Loucks, vice president of the LC board and co-chair of the Bee along with his wife Carolyn Hirst-Loucks, secretary of the board, says they are taking the words for the contest from dictionary.com.
Two people alternate in pronouncing the word and giving a definition while the timer gives the team 30 seconds to spell the word. Three judges decide if the contestant spelled the word correctly.
An attraction the council added to the bee five years ago is the A to Z silent auction. Restaurant gift cards, golf packages, hand-made lamp shades, tickets to local attractions, paintings and a host of other items are on the auction table.
“We have an incredible variety,” Loucks said.
Current sponsors of the bee are Daniel Spagnoli of Brunswick Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in Southport, N.C., Sharon Williams of Shell Joy Hair Fixin Salon in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C. and Jennifer S. Williams of Family Dentistry in Southport.
“[The bee] is fun. That’s the No. 1 thing,” Kim says. “The idea of the Spelling Bee is to promote literacy.”
