UPDATE: Child killed by driver of SUV backing out of driveway
A Conway toddler was struck and killed Wednesday by the driver of a sports utility vehicle that was backing out of a driveway.
Joe Gause, 3, of Conway was pronounced dead at McLeod Loris hospital at 7:04 p.m. Wednesday, according to Horry County Deputy Coroner Tony Hendrick. Gause died of multiple head trauma, Hendrick said.
The deadly crash happened about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday on Ocala Lane when the 30-year-old driver of Chevrolet Tahoe hit a pedestrian who was in the roadway while backing out of a private drive, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol officials.
The driver wasn’t injured in the crash, and the incident remains under investigation by the SCHP.
