UPDATE: Bicyclist struck dead on U.S. 501 identified
South Carolina Highway Patrol responded to a deadly accident involving a bicycle and truck on US 501 around 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
The bicyclist was identified as Robert Witte, 59, of Myrtle Beach, according to a release by deputy coroner Tamara Willard.
Witte was transported to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The bicyclist was reportedly attempting to cross US-501 and hit the trailer portion of a pickup truck and was killed as a result.
The accident shut down two lanes on US-501.
SCHP said no charges are expected because the bicyclist is considered at fault.
