Crews battle fire off S.C. 544 Wednesday night

Flames were reaching into the night sky from the roof of a business off S.C. 544 when Horry County Fire Rescue crews arrived to battle the blaze late Wednesday night.

Firefighters were called out at about 11:30 p.m. to a commercial building off S.C. 544 near Kimberly Drive in Conway, and the highway was shut down from 11:30 p.m. to about 3:30 a.m. from Jackson Bluff Road to Singleton Ridge Road while firefighters worked, officials said.

No one was injured in the blaze, which was still under investigation Thursday afternoon.

Lightening strikes were reported in the area late Wednesday evening, according to officials with the National Weather Service in Wilmington, N.C., but authorities had not named lightening as the culprit by early Thursday afternoon.

Conway Fire Department crews responded to the fire and gave mutual aid, authorities said.
