Update: Autopsy shows CCU student died of natural causes

A 21-year-old art student found dead in a dormitory room at Coastal Carolina University died of natural causes, according to an Horry County coroner.

Horry Country Deputy Coroner Tony Hendrick said that an autopsy performed Sunday morning revealed Brandon Devere Scott had a history of cardiac problems and died of natural causes. No foul play is suspected.

Scott’s body was found inside a residence hall on the CCU campus around 9:30 a.m. Saturday. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was investigating the death.

Martha Hunn, CCU spokeswoman, said state law requires SLED to investigate any deaths on college campuses.

University officials sent out the following message in an email to students, staff and faculty: “It is with great sadness that we notify you of the death of Brandon Devere Scott, a junior art studio major from North Charleston. Plans have not been announced for services at this time. The University will update the community with appropriate information.”

Students are participating in the planning for a memorial service, Hunn said, adding that it could be a week or more before plans are finalized.

“We will communicate to the campus community first, and then to the media as soon as all is planned,” she said.
