One person was killed in a crash on U.S. 501 Monday night involving a mo-ped and car near Carolina Forest.

Brandi Lee Haines, 35, died after the crash about 6:10 p.m. on U.S. 501 near the Sparks Toyota dealership and West Perry Road/Carolina Forest Boulevard, authorities said.

A mo-ped with two riders traveling south on U.S. 501 collided with a 2002 Lexus after the driver of the Lexus pulled out in front of the mo-ped while trying to cross U.S. 501, according to Cpl. Sonny Collins with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Troopers, who are still investigating the incident, said they were not sure if Haines was the driver or passenger on the mo-ped. The other mo-ped rider was taken to Grand Strand Medical Center.

The condition of the person transported to the hospital was unknown Tuesday morning.

The driver of the Lexus was charged with failure to yield the right of way, Collins said.

More information will be released as soon as it becomes available. Please check back for updates.
