Northbound lanes of Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach to be closed Tuesday morning for work at Chapin Park
The two northbound lanes of Kings Highway next to Chapin Memorial Park in Myrtle Beach will be closed for a few hours Tuesday morning as crews work to remove five pine trees from the park.
The closure is set to begin around 8 a.m. During the lane closure, northbound traffic will be detoured onto 14th Avenue North, Chester Street and 16th Avenue North.
Crews began renovating the park, removing trees to “give the park a lighter, more welcoming appearance” last month, according to a city Facebook post Dec. 16. The city has removed about 25 trees from the park so far.
A thinner canopy was chosen in designs to allow “more light and sunshine” into the space, according to the city.
Plans also call for new concrete walking paths and additions of palm trees, fountains, flagpoles and a raised shelter with a performance stage for events held at the park.
The pergola and play structures are set to remain, according to the city, “but the roofed shelter on the Kings Highway side will come down.”
About $200,000 has been budgeted for the project, which is anticipated to be finished sometime this spring.
