Tea Party presidential convention planned for next weekend

Several Republican contenders for the party’s presidential nomination including Donald Trump will head to Myrtle Beach Saturday to speak at the South Carolina Tea Party Coalition Convention at Springmaid Beach Resort.

Also attending the three-day event, beginning Saturday, are U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, Dr. Ben Carson, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Carly Fiorina, and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania.

Trump, who continues to lead in the South Carolina polls, will speak at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Huckabee will speak at 11:20 a.m., and Cruz is scheduled for 2:20 p.m.

Fiorina is scheduled to make remarks at 11:20 a.m. Sunday and Santorum will speak at 2:20 p.m.. Carson is slated to appear at 11:20 a.m. Monday, Jan. 18.

More than 40 speakers will address the convention, including South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson.

Tickets must be purchased in advance on the South Carolina Tea Party Coalition’s website.

SC legislators back in session Tuesday

The second regular session of the 121st South Carolina General Assembly will reconvene Tuesday in Columbia. A bill to increase the state’s gas tax is among the first issues that the state Senate will take up.

Filing for Surfside Beach offices begins Monday

Candidate filing for mayor and four town council seats in Surfside Beach begins at 9 a.m. Monday and will remain open until 4 p.m. Friday. Both the General Election for mayor and three council seats, as well as a Special Election to fill an unexpired term for one council seat, will be April 5.

MLK celebrations begin Saturday

Martin Luther King holiday events kick off Saturday from 9-11 a.m. with a Business and Opportunity Workshop at the Mary C. Canty Recreation Center, 971 Canal Street. Also on Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. there is a Job Fair and Employability Workshop at the center. The final event at the center Saturday will be at 1 p.m. with the Statewide Deliberative Dialogue Forum.

On Sunday, “Carolina Has Talent” Gospel Explosion: Musical Tributes to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., will begin at 5 p.m. at Sandy Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 1008 Carver Street. Then, from 5-8 p.m., there will be a Civil Rights Sunday: Ecumenical Service at the church.

On Monday at 8 a.m., there will be a Corporate and Community Awards Breakfast at the Mary C. Canty Recreation Center, 971 Canal Street. Then, at 12:15 p.m., the 10th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. parade will take place on Ocean Boulevard, and begins near 24th Avenue South and ends at Ninth Avenue South.

One-lane traffic expected for swing bridge in North Myrtle Beach

Crews from Saffo Contractors, Inc., will begin Monday to set up for the start of annual maintenance work on the swing bridge at Barefoot Resort & Golf. The maintenance work, which includes paint touch up, will get underway Wednesday and will last for about three weeks.

Traffic controls will be established at the bridge and motorists should expect to encounter one lane of traffic at times throughout the maintenance period.
