Area schools begin winter break

Winter break begins after classes are dismissed Friday in Horry and Georgetown county schools.

Students in Georgetown County Schools return to classes Jan. 4, while students in Horry return Jan. 5.

Two presidential debates slated this week

Republican presidential candidates with at least 3.5 percent support nationally will debate at 9 p.m. Tuesday broadcasted on CNN and free for non-cable subscribers at cnn.com. The candidates will debate at The Venetian in Las Vegas.

Then at 8 p.m. Saturday, the Democratic presidential candidates will debate from St. Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. This debate will be broadcasted on ABC.

Report on HOAs in state could be released Friday

A Study Committee on Homeowners Associations report on current laws, policies and practices of homeowner associations in South Carolina, and how HOAs in other states operate may be released as early as Friday.

The committee was commissioned by the state legislature to determine what recommendations can be made to the general assembly about legislation that’s in the best interest of the homeowners, the managers and developers.

Classroom size to be discussed by school board

The Horry County Board of Education will hear two different proposals Monday on whether or not to add students to middle and high school classrooms. One motion pushes for an addition of 2 students over 2 years - to save the district about $3 million - which would cut 41 teaching positions.

The board meeting starts at 6 p.m. at the district office: 335 Four Mile Road, Conway.
