With Veterans Day falling this year on a Wednesday, Nov. 11, anyone who has served, or is active in, any branch of the U.S. military has many ways to enjoy a special thank you, whether through a special program or ceremony.

The events cover an array of activities and outlets for everyone to turn out to show respect to former and current service personnel. They include, on the holiday, the 12th annual “Salute to American Veterans,” at Coastal Carolina University’s Wheelwright Auditorium in Conway, with the premiere of the “Patriot Dream: The Story of the Pilgrims” documentary; Brandi Alamasi, a Marine Corps corporal who served in Iraq, as a guest speaker at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10420 in Murrells Inlet, discussing “Women in the Military”; and the city of Georgetown’s Veterans Day Parade, with plans for a flight of a Hughes OH-6 Loach helicopter above Front Street as a remembrance for everyone who served in the Vietnam War, a chapter in U.S. history that spanned four presidencies: Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford.

The Wachesaw Plantation East community in Murrells Inlet will lead in to Veterans Day week at 2 p.m. Sunday with its first-ever flag dedication, honored with raising the Stars and Stripes that flew over the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., on Flag Day, June 14.

Also, various businesses will have freebies for honored personnel on Veterans Day: Coast RTA rides, Great Clips haircuts, and meals at Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar., Golden Corral, K&W Cafeterias, and the one Texas Roadhouse in our area, in Garden City Beach.
