A deadly crash blocked southbound lanes on U.S. 17 Bypass for more than an hour Friday morning, authorities said.

Gary Jones, 57, of Myrtle Beach, was killed in the crash, according to Michelle McSpadden, Horry County Deputy Coroner.

The driver of a 1998 Ford sports utility vehicle was killed after his SUV was struck, according to Sgt. Bob Beres with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at 10:28 a.m. at U.S. 17 Bypass at Shetland Lane, near Harrelson Boulevard, Beres said.

The SUV driver was trying to turn onto U.S. 17 Bypass from Shetland Lane and was struck on the driver’s side by the driver of a 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck, Beres said.

The 30-year-old pickup truck driver was taken to Grand Strand Hospital by EMS and was cited by the highway patrol for driving under suspension, and that was the only charge for him by Friday afternoon, Beres said.

This crash remains under investigation by the highway patrol.
