Publix Super Market plans to build a new store in The Market Common area next year, which if approved would become the chain’s fifth store in the Myrtle Beach area.

The grocery store would be part of a new development still in the planning stages for Coventry Boulevard and U.S. 17 Bypass.

“We haven’t seen the plans yet for Publix, but Myrtle Beach shoppers are certainly going to have their pick of grocery stores if all these developments come to pass,” said Mark Kruea, Myrtle Beach spokesman.

A Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market is coming to the Farrow Parkway and U.S. 17 Bypass area, and a Piggly Wiggly already operates in The Market Common.

“We’re excited that new businesses are coming to the area that was the former Air Force base,” Kruea said. “The economy slowed things down, but we’ve seen a sharp uptick in new business construction in the last 18 months.”

Publix has one store already open in North Myrtle Beach -- a 45,6000 square-foot facility where 150 people are employed. There’s also one in Pawleys Island. Publix markets are in the construction phase for the Grande Dunes area and also Carolina Forest near Highway 501.
