Bystander rescues man from Garden City Beach apartment fire
A bystander rescued a man inside his burning Garden City Beach apartment Wednesday afternoon.
Firefighters were called about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday to the structure fire, which had flames showing when crews arrived at the Cambridge Apartments off Heritage Drive in Garden City Beach.
Captain Jerry Howerton with Murrells Inlet-Garden City Beach Fire Department said the man suffered non life-threatening injuries in the fire and was taken to a local hospital before being transferred to a Georgia burn center for further treatment.
The unit the fire originated in suffered “a good amount of damage” and three other nearby units had some fire and heat damage, Howerton said.
The fire is still under investigation by the MIGCBFR, and a cause was yet to be determined on Thursday morning, authorities said.
Howerton said the bystander who rescued the fire victim saved some pets as well.
