State transportation officials will hold a public hearing Monday to discuss safety improvements proposed for a dangerous intersection connecting 76th Avenue North with U.S. 17 Bypass in Myrtle Beach -- the site of nearly two dozen crashes with injuries since 2008.

The meeting, hosted by representatives from the South Carolina Department of Transportation, will be at 6 p.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church, 805 79th Avenue North.

It will have minimal adverse impact on the local community, but will greatly improve safety at this intersection.”

Transportation officials plan to construct an acceleration lane for traffic exiting 76th Avenue North to merge onto the bypass, as well as a median-protected left-turn lane onto 76th Avenue North. Roadside improvements along the northbound edges of the intersection are expected to enhance visibility for cars entering the bypass.

Presently, traffic entering the bypass has to cross straight through an open median then turn left directly into the traffic lane.

“It will have minimal adverse impact on the local community, but will greatly improve safety at this intersection,” according to the state transportation department.

Work is scheduled to begin in December with right-of-way acquisitions, but construction is not set to begin until early 2017.

The project is part of the Federal Highway Safety Improvement Program and was identified for inclusion because of high crash rates associated with the intersection.
