Hurricane Joaquin causes cancellations, rescheduling

Hurricane Joaquin is expected to bring 5 to 7 inches of rain to the Grand Strand this weekend, and organizers have begun to cancel or reschedule their planned events.

Forecasters upgraded Joaquin’s strength to a category 3 hurricane Thursday morning.

Check back often, for this list will be updated cancellations and postponements are announced.

High school football games being held Thursday

▪ Lake City at North Myrtle Beach junior varsity teams will play at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, with the varsity game expected to start at about 7:30 p.m.

▪ Dillon at Aynor expected to begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

▪ Wilson at Myrtle Beach will be played at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

▪ Georgetown at St. James moved to 6 p.m. Thursday; St. James homecoming activities moved to Oct. 23.

▪ Carver Bays at Creek Bridge at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

▪ Mullins at Waccamaw High at 6:30 p.m. Monday; Waccamaw homecoming parade moved to 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Area events

▪ 2015 In the Pink Breast Cancer walk canceled and will not be rescheduled. The event raised $39,000 to support the foundation’s Breast Care Fund as of Thursday afternoon, organizers said.

▪ Brookgreen Gardens’ “Harvest Home Weekend” Festival rescheduled to Oct. 10-11.

▪ “Calabash Big Sweep” will be Oct. 17.▪ “California Roots: The Carolina Sessions” rescheduled to a forthcoming spring date.

▪ Conway Fall Festival is canceled.

▪ Georgetown County Family Justice Center has rescheduled it's Second Annual Walk Against Domestic Violence Event to Oct. 10.

▪ Horry County Fire Rescue open houses planned for this weekend rescheduled – date TBA.

▪ Oktoberfest at The Market Common will be Oct. 23-24.

▪ Surfside Beach Family Festival will be Oct. 17.

▪ “PinkOut Workout,” for Caring in Our Lifetime, remains on Saturday, but at Ocean Bay Elementary School gymnasium, 950 International Drive, northwest of Myrtle Beach, west of S.C. 31.

▪ North Myrtle Beach Farmer’s Market canceled Friday, and Market Common and Georgetown farmers markets canceled Saturday.
